I find myself drawn to Typography and often find the pieces of design work I like are typography based or have a type in it that particularly interest me. Type, to me is not just lettering, but about creating and arranging shapes in an original manner that still communicates to the receiver. It is a series of symbols that can express great amounts of various emotions and become very personal when used in the right context. You may be able to tell someone's handwriting from another persons and you could even visualize them just from that piece.
Hand made/drawn type especially interest me and I really enjoyed the hand drawn type brief last year. It meant I could combine my messy, expressive side with the more intricate ideas. This brief brought out some of my best work and i ended up producing some really interesting typefaces. I am especially proud of the one on my final poster.
But type is not just the shapes expressing different feelings, I feel the layout of type on a piece holds great importance as well. How it aligns on the page, screen, sheet, wall (or whatever other medias that can be worked on) can make or break a piece.
Since starting university and studying a small amount of type, my love for it has grown and seems to follow me everywhere. I now judge every piece I walk past, casting a decision as to whether it is "good" or "bad" type. Noticing car registration numbers to shop windows and billboards. From the train station to magazines and newspapers. From digital forms to more interactive hand constructed type like Sagmeisters "Trying to look good limits my life" piece.

About Me
- Rob Griffiths
- Even though Graphic design is visual, I find that a lot of my inspiration comes from music that I listen to. The lyrics or a peculiar arrangement of a song or piece can stir up an emotion and inspire me to think in a different way that can put me in a creative mood. I like music to challenge people and hopefully create something unique and fresh and not just be “good to dance to”. I often work freehand and think there has been a lot of lost beauty since the major influence of the mac, but this is not to say I don’t like using them, I often use them in my work, especially for layout and to touch up or change designs, I just sometimes feel a computer loses some surprising mistakes which can create a new idea and gets you out of the mindset of sticking to one plan and carrying it through. My Design inspiration comes from the likes of "The Why Not Associates", Adrian Shaughnessy and Stanley Donwood. Typography is were I feel my major passion and especially hand made type, which is where my love for the why not associates comes from. I enjoy experimenting with different medias to create new and interesting ways for a typeface and would love to develop this in the near future.
